Besides football, volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world for both males and females. There are many famous volleyball coaches worldwide, including Bernardo Rocha de Rezende, Eugenio George Lafita, and Givi Akhvlediani.
1/ Bernardo Rocha de Rezende
Bernardo Rocha de Rezende is one of the most successful Brazilian coaches in the history of volleyball. He has accumulated over 30 major titles in his twenty-year career, guiding Brazilian male and female teams.
Before becoming a volleyball coach, Mr. Rezende had played volleyball from 1979 to 1986. As a player, he competed in two editions of the Olympic Games, won the silver medal with the Brazilian team in the Summer Olympics 1984.
Mr. Rezende began his coaching career in 1988 as an assistant to Bebeto de Freitas at the Summer Olympics 1988.
He became coach of the Brazilian female team in 1990 and helped his team to two Olympic medals and three FIVB World Grand Prix titles. After leaving the female team in 2000, he has become a coach of the male team and helped it win the Olympic medal in 2004, two World Cups, three World Champions, and eight World Leagues.
2/ Eugenio George Lafita
Eugenio George Lafita was born in Cuba on March 29, 1933, and passed away on June 1, 2012. He began his volleyball career in 1947 and the coaching career in 1963 with the Cuban men’s junior team.
Lafita worked with the men’s senior team and took a gold medal of the Central America and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in 1966. Since 1968, he took charge of the Women’s National Team.
3/ Givi Akhvlediani
Givi Akhvlediani, a Russian volleyball coach, was born on July 17, 1918, and passed away on August 29, 2003. During his volleyball coaching career, he became a senior men’s coach of the USSR team between 1958 and 1963 and a senior women’s national team coach of the USSR between 1967 and 1976.
In 2013, he was admitted to the Hall of Fame in Holyoke volleyball as the best coach of the twentieth century.
